Don Don Prawn Noodles – Super Shiok

Don Don Prawn Noodles is quite delicious & generous with ingredients & soup. So happy that there’s lots of umami soup to slurp on & they’re not stingy with that. I like the hint of sweetness at the end of each slurp.

I will return.. Which says a lot, because I super love prawn mee & there are several “highly-raved-about” ones that I disliked & hence wouldn’t go back to.

Large Bowl of Prawn Mee

Circuit Road Hawker Centre is quite quiet in the afternoon. I had my bowl of Prawn Mee (Large, $5.50 nett) at a very off-peak timing… Basically at 3pm lol. Despite this, while I ate, I saw several people coming to the stall to order. Seems like I’m not the only one who appreciates this bowl of goodness.

Favourite Mushroom Noodles

Sixth Ave Wanton Mee has a simple menu of various noodle dishes such as Dumpling Noodles ζ°΄ι₯Ίι’ ($4.00 nett) & Wanton Mee δΊ‘εžι’ ($3.50 nett), but my all-time favourite is their Mushroom Noodles 香菇青 ($4.00 nett).

It’s my go-to default dish whenever I am here. The mee kia noodles are perfectly bouncy, & the mushrooms plump & juicy. My mum finds the mushrooms bitter, though, & preferred her Wanton Mee. I guess she dunno how to 吃苦 (jkjk sorry mum).

I placed my order via Facebook messenger the night before (7:00PM cut-off time), & let them know I would bring my own clean containers to minimize waste. When your order is confirmed, you’ll get a confirmation number.

They’re still open during this circuit breaker period, with safe distancing measures in place. When I arrived late morning on a Saturday, there were about 5 people in the queue. But since I had pre-ordered, I skipped to the front of the queue with my confirmation number, & paid up to collect my food. Quite shiok 😁

Remember to stand >1m apart when you’re waiting in line during #circuitbreaker times

Popped round the corner to buy some coffee, returned to wait for my food & it was done really quickly. It’s quite rare to see 3 generations working together at a hawker stall. Thank you, Sixth Avenue Wanton Mee, for staying open & continuing to feed us with your delicious noodles!

Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa – Soup Isn’t Thick, But is Delicious

I’ve read about this stall at Alexandra Village Food Centre for the longest time, & have always walked past it but never tried. My dad ordered a bowl of laksa ($4 small/$5 medium/$6 large – prices are nett) & wanted to share – I couldn’t say no.

I was surprised to find the soup not viscous at all; in fact, I was afraid with such thin soup, I’d be disappointed.

Depot Road Zhen Shan Mei Claypot Laksa

My fears were alleviated as I slurped my first spoonful – the soup is on the lemak side, but overall good flavour. Without adding any extra chilli paste (i.e. this is the default), the spicyness really hits the back of your throat. Have a drink prepared if you, just like me, don’t eat spicy food much!

The thick bee hoon 粗米粉 noodles were a bit too soft for my liking, but absorbed the soup well. In terms of ingredients, they were alright in terms of variety, & fairly fresh. Plenty of shredded chicken, a dismal single prawn, several taupok pieces, cockles & beansprouts.

In all, this was a delicious bowl of laksa. I’m not head over heels in love with it, but I’d eat it again. Just not too often as it isn’t the most healthy dish!

Eat at Seven’s Udon Kamon – Scrumptious Fusion Udon

Udon has grown on me in recent years – especially when I’m craving for something carby. The new menu at Eat At Seven’s Udon Kamon is right up my alley, with hawker-inspired udon dishes.

Local twists on high quality udon

Walking that fine balance with the innovativeness of local cuisine, yet staying true to its Japanese roots, diners have 3 specialty dishes to indulge in:

Dark Sauce Dry Udon

The Dark Sauce Dry Udon ($10.80++) has such a simple name that doesn’t fully capture how delicious it is. This was a hot favourite amongst everyone at the table, quite closely following its inspiration of KL chilli ban mee.

The spicy & sweet dark sauce coats the udon very well. With ingredients like with minced pork, crispy anchovies, vegetables & half an ajitsuke tamago – dare I say this is a pretty dang balanced dish!

Ipoh Style Chicken Udon

The Ipoh Style Chicken Udon ($10.80++) is my personal favourite, subtly reminiscent of Ipoh-style hor fun. Imagine their signature sanuki udon in a delicious soy-based gravy that is light on the palate & fragrant, with plump mushrooms providing that earthy flavour, & juicy texture. The silky smooth sliced chicken thigh is steamed with ginger & Japanese leek, & thereafter drizzled with light soy sauce & black sesame oil.

Are you salivating already? The multi-dimensional layers of flavours are why this was my favourite dish of the night 😍

Truffle Beef Ying Yang Udon

Last but certainly not least, tantilize your tastebuds & noses with the Truffle Beef Ying Yang Udon ($15.80++). The sauce, made from XO sauce, truffle & bean paste, is umami & thick though not overwhelming. The truffle smell is pretty strong though πŸ˜‰

I didn’t expect the interesting double-texture of the udon noodles to work so well. Half of the udon is flattened & fried such that it is slightly crispy, even after soaking in the sauce for a while.

Thanks @alhsx for the invite & Brand Cellar + Udon Kamon for the hospitality! πŸ’•

Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t the best bowl of beef noodles ever. The beef slides are fairly thin (though delicious). I think the additional noodles meant that my soup was absorbed by them extra quickly, too. But the noodles are well made, what little I tasted of the soup was refreshing & tasty. & the chilli I added to my bowl was shiok!

Overall, it was a comforting bowl of noodles in this cold weather, & was a very affordable meal for me. & yes, I would dine here again. They have some other options like tomato soup bases & dry mushroom sauce noodles that I’d be keen to try.

You can also watch chef actually pull your noodles!

Umami Prawn Mee Soup at ABC Brickworks’ Yong Zhen

I took a gamble on Yong Zhen Lor Mee Prawn Mee 永珍區青虾青 (#01-40), not because there isn’t anything famous/worthy at ABC Brickworks Market & Food Centre (just Google), but because I came here for a late lunch & several lunch stalls had closed, & dinner stalls hadn’t opened.

My eyes lit up as I tasted the soup of the Prawn Mee ($3 nett). It was umami, slightly herbal, & very tasty. I slurped it again just to confirm – yep, it’s good.

Prawn Mee – soup & dry versions available

The noodles they use for the prawn mee is the lor mee noodles – the thick & flat yellow ones. I don’t actually like lor mee; I’ve never tried this combination before…. But I really like it! The silky smooth kuay teow mixed in upon auntie’s recommendation adds a nice texture variant, too.

Can’t complain about the ingredients in this dish. This bowl is priced affordably, & the prawns (only 2 pieces, wish there were more!), fishcake & pork slides were of decent quality. I finished everything in the bowl… Except the prawn tails. Mmmm yes I will be back for more.

Disappointing Prawn Mee at Wei Zhong Qi Prawn Noodle

My usual favourite stall at Alexandra Village Food Centre was closed for 2 weeks, so I ventured to another one. Prawn Mee was the craving of the day, & it being past 2PM on a weekday, I didn’t have as much options at this hawker centre as compared to during regular lunch hour.

Gave Wei Zhong Qi Prawn Noodle ε‘³δΈε₯‡θ™Ύι’ (#01-87) a shot, & ordered the large prawn noodles ($6.00 nett) because I was hungry.

In theory, this would have been good. Substantial ingredients: Several sizeable peeled prawns, fishcakes, thin pork slices that weren’t tough, & bean sprouts. However, this fell short of expectations & I knew it the moment it was served to me.

A lacklustre bowl of prawn mee

You can tell why, too. Just look at how overcooked the prawns are. & looking at the texture, the freshness is questionable too. My first bite into it confirmed this, & I struggled to finish the rest of the prawns in my bowl.

The soup also felt salt-laden, & didn’t have that umami flavour that I love. I also struggled to finish that, as well… Which is so unlike me.

Overall, unfortunately a disappointing bowl of prawn noodles that I wouldn’t recommend or order again.
