Laut – Supporting Local Food & Cocktails

Had a really enjoyable night with a plethora of delicious food, good variety of cocktails & even better company. I enjoyed listening to the unique stories behind each of these & I’m sure you will too. All part of the experience & good vibes here.

Bar seats at Laut

So the food at Laut – how do I summarize it, if that’s even possible. Each dish has a story of its own, inspired by local flavours, staying quite true to that yet managing to be unique/intriguing.

Sometimes, you just need to try a dish to really be wow-ed by it. Describing it doesn’t do it justice (or maybe it’s just me 😂). The Burnt Eggplant Dip ($12+) was that for me. It’s essentially that, with a tomato & onion relish – served with curry spiced papadums.

Burnt Eggplant Dip

First of all, props to the papadums for being fresh & crispy, because there’s nothing like a soggy papadum to ruin your day. Secondly, what sorcery is exactly in this dip?? Such distinct yet harmonious flavours: The smokeyness from the char, creaminess of the eggplant, & flavourful spice (not heat!) from the papadums. This was a hot favourite for the original days when customers would order this during CB 1.0 for delivery. &, of course, it still is.

Bergedil with Umami Soil

The Bergedil ($15+) is another dish that has a cool story to it. It does remain true to its tasty fried potato nature – with good fragrance & flavour which I believe is in part from the Madras curry oil, balanced with the earthiness from the trumpet mushrooms. But what truly takes the cake is what they call the umami soil. That’s where the story gets pretty cool to me! I’ll leave that to the good folks at Laut to tell it to you. I was quite fascinated as Damian took me through the narrative. 😍

I had a Malay-speaking friend who asked me if Laut was seafood-inspired cuisine, as laut translates to seafood in Malay. The scrumptious sharing plates I enjoyed had seafood as the main star. When dining restrictions open up, I’d recommend dining in with a sizeable group, so you can order more items off this sharing menu.

Squid Gado

I hate it when squid/octopus are overcooked, rubbery & tough to the chew. Laut’s Squid Gado ($27+) was anything but that. The seared whole squid was done so marvellously that it was almost melt in your mouth… I had to pause to think about whether I actually put the correct thing in my mouth 😂 (just an excuse to have a 2nd bite, amiraiiii?)

& the “Gado” in the name – you guessed it – the peanut sauce in the Gado Gado we all know & love.

Otah

BUT WAIT, that’s not all. Introducing the Otah ($37+) – by far the most atas otah you’ve ever had… & dare I say, it is worth it. The mix of fish? Oh, no big deal, just some awesome barramundi, blended mackerel & squid. 🧐

This otah really left me wanting more. Its texture is bouncy & firm, & the rempah mix was on point with good flavour. I loved the Nyonya Achar on the side as well, which provided nice refreshing acidity in between bites. It actually also goes well with the otah in a single bite, too. On the whole, this was an addictive dish & one of my favourites of the night.

Now, on to the drinks. I tend to be wary when cocktails arrive at my table very pretty. I appreciate good aesthetics, but not at the expense of bad taste, i.e. saccharine sweet or artificially syrupy. This was anything but that; & the variety of bespoke cocktails here is quite impressive:

Grass

🔸Grass ($21+) – slightly savoury & refreshing 👌🏻
➡️ Gin, Ginger Flowers, Pickle Brine, 3 Grass Kombucha

Kopi O

🔸 Kopi O ($21+) – strong flavours, but thankfully I was able to sleep that night. Personally enjoyed the creaminess of the coconut oil that goes well with the coffee.
➡️ Trigona vodka, nitro charged Sumatra coffee, toasted bread vinegar, orange pekoe tea, coconut oil

🔸 Mata Kuching ($21+) – as a sweet treat, this isn’t my typical cocktail profile, but is likely an easy drink for some folks.
➡️ Aged malt, smoked longan distillate, rambutan & lychee soda, cat whiskers flower (they upsized our flower for us haha)

🔸Lengkuas ($21+) – refreshing, beachy vibes, feels like a summertime drink without the scorching heat or sunburn
➡️ Aged Malaysian Molasses, Citrus Granitas, Laut triple spiced ginger beer.

Thanks Damian / @drinking_noodle for the invite & hospitality! 💕

A Cheerful Pasta Dish from handBELLO

handBELLO is running a 20% off promotion during P2HA right now, & online orders are usually ready in an hour. I received a call 1 min after I submitted it online to confirm my pickup timing, which I appreciated because I was able to eat this while still hot upon collection 👏🏻

La Nonna’s (U.P. $22.00 nett) is a cheerful dish with a refreshing zesty lemon twang & spicy fun from the chilli flakes in every bite. The casarecce was cooked al dente, & I enjoyed the crunchy texture (& healthiness haha) that the broccolini added.. However, the Kurobuta pork sausage was overwhelmingly salty & overpowered the other flavours each time it was in my bite.

Nonetheless, still quite keen to check out the other pasta dishes that #handbellosg has to offer. I’ve got my eye on the Fun-Guy & Pink Vodka 😁

Sarnies Promo Codes for Coffee Beans and Food

Sarnies’ coffee beans are going at an awesome 1-for-1 ’til 1st June 2020! Simply walk in to their store along Telok Ayer street to purchase, or order online with the promo code WENEEDCOFFEE.

Coffee beans & a nice note from Sarnies

I got the Meerkat blend, described as: whiffs of sweetness when freshly ground; a chocolate & nutty aroma, followed by a smooth lingering toasty aftertaste. Bought a bag for me, & a bag to give away (since I can’t finish 2 bags that quickly). You can opt for various grind sizes: Whole bean/espresso/filter/french press.

There was a bit of communication breakdown regarding what I wanted – I walked in asking for a coarse grind, & they kindly ground the beans on the spot for me 👍🏻 But I realized when I reached home that they’d given me an espresso grind.

It’s not easy to communicate & confirm details through a mask, I guess.. So next time I think I’ll write my order down or place it online for self collection. The benefit of walking in-store is that you get Shopback GO cashback, so that’s my preference 😁

Besides selling coffee beans, Sarnies also sells breakfast/brunch/lunch grub! With the promo code HELLO10, you get a nice 10% off your online order. I placed mine a day in advance & paid up using PayPal after details were WhatsApped to me. Other payment options: iBanking/PayNow. Whatever method you use, payment must be done before your order is confirmed.

Yummy Quinoa Salad

Their Quinoa Salad ($15.50 nett) looks like health, tastes like DELICIOUS health. You’ve got feta, olives, pomegranate, pistachios – tossed in a bed of spinach & fluffy quinoa with cumin dressing. My mum & I enjoyed this, & we would order this again.

Sarnies’ Brunch Wrap Set – so good

My favourite item from Sarnies’ menu was the Brunch Wrap Set ($13.50 nett) – only available online on weekends & public holidays for brunch. My wrap of choice was the Breakfast Wrap (U.P. $9.50 nett), which is stuffed with eggs, roasted tomatoes & mushrooms.

The description alone reads like a deliciously good idea; biting into it convinced me this was a GREAT idea. Despite a 20-minute drive home, it was still warm, yet not soggy. The eggs were fluffy, mushrooms juicy & earthy, & acidity & slight char of the tomatoes gave life to this wrap. I shared it with my parents, & they were impressed.

The set comes with a drink of choice – any coffee/tea/kombucha. I had a Flat White (U.P. $5 nett), & I honestly don’t need to say anything about their coffee ‘cos I’ve gushed about it so much already. Consistently tasty, strong, & this is why I keep coming back.

Sarnies stash, mm mm yeahhh

Free the Robot – Bubble Tea, Coffee, Soups (and Self Pick-up Discounts!)

Free the Robot has options for delivery & self pick-ups. You get 15% off online orders (no min. spend) if you opt for self pick-up. It was too good an offer to pass up!

I love the wall art outside Free the Robot

There are a couple of open-air parking lots along Telok Ayer Street. If you’re lucky, you can stop right at the storefront to get your goods. If not, the other lots lining the street are still convenient – just a short, convenient walk away to zip in & out for collection

My first takeaway purchase of coffee & soup

I bought 2 bottles of coffee, good to keep in the fridge for a week:

  • Robo-one Chilled Vanilla ($14,00+, blue label)
  • Free the Robot Signature Cold ($14.00+, red label)

Each bottle contains 500ml of coffee & is enough for 3 servings, they say. But I finished half a bottle in one sitting…. Lmaoooo I guess I am a heavy drinker. I kept the other half in my own glass bottle, since they use crown cork bottle caps that aren’t resealable.

Not my first time drinking their coffee – quality is consistent & I will order again. Turns out they also accept returning the empty, washed glass bottles (never hurts to ask if stores do). I did just that when I dropped by to pick up my next order.

Bags of soup

My mum is crazy about their soups, I’ve bought them twice already. They are thicccc & delicious, & “how come i don’t feel thirsty after drinking this ah”.

As I wanted to store them in the fridge for consumption later in the week, I chose the “vacuum pack” option. But if you wanted to have it fresh & hot, just select “hot”. Ordering online with them is pretty intuitive & simple.

Each bag has 350g of soup inside & there are several options – I bought the first 3:

  • Roasted Tomato Soup ($8+)
  • Mushroom Medley Soup ($10+)
  • Broccoli Soup ($8+)
  • Baby Abalone Chowder ($14+)

Unfortunately the broccoli soup doesn’t qualify for the 15% self pickup discount.. But if the quality of the first 2 soups I’ve tried is anything to go by, I’m not complaining.

Riding on the bubble tea wave/craze, Free the Robot now also offers milk tea or coffee with boba in them. Comes in a plastic bottle with a boba straw (but I rejected the straw as I have my own one at home).

A small bottle of milk tea with boba

Since I was picking up the other items I ordered from them, I thought to add a FTR Original Milk Tea with Boba ($6.00+) to my order, just for fun. It’s somewhat customizable:

  • Sugar level (0/25/50/100%)
  • Milk type (full cream milk by default; soy/oat milk additional $1+)

Take note that the 250ml portion is only about half the size of a medium cup at your regular bubble tea places. It isn’t that big! To get the larger (doubled) size of 500ml would set you back an additional $5+.

My thoughts: This is a bit expensive for me for the value & joy it brings to me. I’m not a hardcore bubble tea fan, so I don’t know if you trust my judgement. I would’ve liked the tea taste to be stronger, but I will say that the boba/pearls were sooo good & chewy.

But where are the pearls?

Do check that they remember to put the boba in, btw! They initially forgot & I discovered after I left their store. Looped back & they were super apologetic about it – but ok lah, at least I wasn’t too far away 😂

If you’re picking up your order like I did, try to bring your own bags! Although I must say.. Their cloth bags are pretty cute & aesthetic. Take only what you need – if you’re a repeat customer, I reckon 1 bag is enough so their supplies can go to other customers!

I like their bag! Thanks guys!

I too have one now & will add it to my cloth bag collection. Auntie is like that one, bring cloth bag anywhere & everywhere 😜

Sarnies Coffee – Consistently Amazing

Sarnies’ coffee always comes up top. They’re popular for a reason; consistent quality, smooth coffee that goes down easily, & every sip makes me happy.

1-for-1 Latte to Go

I redeemed a 1-for-1 coffee deal here thanks to Shopback GO. Pick anything off their extensive coffee menu – I chose a Latte ($5.00). This deal is valid for regular-sized drinks, which is the smallest size, but enough to keep me satisfied.

Even without 1-for-1, I’d pay full price for their coffee as I’ve done all these years. By paying with my Shopback GO linked credit card, I can clock loyalty rewards here each time.. Upon an accumulated spend of $30 (til 30 Jun), I can redeem a free coffee/tea. Can’t wait 😂

Salmon Cream Cheese Bagel with Latte

To make my journey worthwhile (& because I’m a little fatty), I also bought Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese Bagel ($9.50 nett) to go. Bagels generally travel & keep well. Even when biting in at room temperature, it wasn’t stiff or tough. The cream cheese & capers within added creaminess & acidity to this breakfast delight.

Breakfast is available daily 7:30 – 11AM. Sarnies is one of the rare cafés that start their day so early – great for all you early birds who want to catch those worms 🙂

Bring A Clean Container… But Don’t Do This

Pro-tip: Perching your container on the dashboard while you drive home may seem like a good idea to keep your food warm under the sun… But when you make a right turn, your container is gonna slide away & fall to the ground.

Thank God my bagel fit snugly into the container I brought. It emerged from the tumble to the ground unharmed. #saynotobaddriving #strapyourfoodin #seatbeltsplease

Taco Mantra Serves Indian-Mexican Fusion Food Perfect with Freehouse’s Beer

Freehouse turned 4 recently (time flies – congrats!), but Taco Mantra taking over their kitchen was something that happened only recently.

Serving up Indian-Mexican fusion cuisine, their tacos (2 for $12, 3 for $15) are characteristically packed with lots of flavour, with ingredients nestled in a single soft flour taco.

Beef, Chicken & Fish Tacos

I thought the Kerala Beef & Chicken Tikka tacos were ordinary; my favourite was Ma’s Fish! It wasn’t too oily & the fish was tender, flaky & moist inside. The fruit salsa complimented the fried fish well, too.

I liked the Ma’s Fish Tacos best

A 4th variant, the Pulled Karana Jackfruit, was out of stock when we visited.. But it is meant to mimic pulled pork slathered in barbecue sauce. Would be curious to try it after seeing all the veganized food videos on YouTube!

If you & your friends are looking for finger food to go with the plethora of craft beer that Freehouse has on tap, you can consider Taco Mantra’s sharing platters. This one, the Platter for 2 ($60), has ribeye steak, fried pork belly (sio bak), chicken tikka, mantra wings & samosas. All platters are served with slaw, poppadum chips, mint yogurt & house sauce.

Platter for 2

For more manageable portion of snacks, you could opt for the Pachos ($15) – their version of poppadum nachos, or Quail Egg Sambal Fries ($15). The Grilled Cheese Naanwich ($15) isn’t an appetizer, but is quite highly snackable.

Pachos are Poppadum Nachos
Grilled Naanwich

Personally, though, I wasn’t a huge fan of these. I prefer the crunchiness of original nachos (the poppadum quickly became soggy where the sauce hits), & the sambal fries were too peppery for my tastebuds. I did love the bouncy quail eggs though, hehe.

Quail Egg Sambal Fries

Finger food does go well with beer, but as someone who isn’t much of a snacker, I’d rather spend my money on the tacos. Or, even better…

.. THEIR BURGERS. Taco Mantra’s burgers really stood out to me. The crowd favourite was the Spiced Lamb Burger ($20), & that was mine too. The lamb patty had the slight gameyness that I love, yet it’s palatable enough for others as it doesn’t overpower the flavours of the dish. Topped with a cool mint yogurt for good balance. I would order this again in a heartbeat.

The Double Cheeseburger ($24) was also good, with 2 juicy beef patties, cheese, sweet bacon onion jam & tangy dill pickle mayonnaise.Their patties are fairly thick, so IMHO a single patty would suffice. A Single Cheeseburger goes for $20.

Rookery’s 3rd Outlet Serves Up Good Mains, Plentiful Tapas & Drinks

In the last year, I’ve patronised Rookery’s other outlet at Capital Tower fairly frequently, & it was packed each time I went. They must be doing well because they now have a 3rd outlet at China Square. Congrats guys!

There is a live band that plays on Thursdays, & it was a little too noisy for me to chat properly while they’re playing. However, it’s nice if you are dining solo or aren’t trying to make conversations with anyone. The band played a good mix of classic songs.

Regrettably, I forgot to take a photo of my drink after taking a few sips. That’s a Tokyo Martini hanging out in the back. My drink – the Old But Not Forgotten (Happy Hour $13++, U.P. $17++) – is in the foreground.

Happy Hour Cocktails

This well-rounded drink had much to offer, & is in line with my drink preferences. The smokeyness from the Laphroaig whiskey (ohh my love) & the burnt butterscotch, caramelized sweetness of brandied cherries, & citrus hints from the flamed orange peel.

If cocktails aren’t your thing, you can choose from their extensive menu of spirits. There’s bound to be something for everyone. I picked a Lagavulin 16 ($15++) on the rocks.

Lagavulin 16 on the Rocks

I usually order & enjoy pasta dishes at Rookery’s other outlets, so I was eager to try their mains. These mains are available from 11:30AM onwards, great for the CBD crowd to drop by for lunch & dinner. Being so used to their pasta & as noodle lover in general, I was surprised how much I enjoyed these mains.

I eat sooo much chicken at home that I rarely order chicken when I’m dining out. However, it delights me when I’m served up a good chicken – & that’s what the Roast Chicken & Stuffing ($25++) was. The cranberry stuffing made this dish slightly sweet, & you get your fill of carbs with the creamy mashed potato underneath & roasted pumpkin.

Roast Chicken & Stuffing

We unanimously decided that the Miso Glazed Norwegian Trout ($28++) was the best dish of the night. No wonder there’s a chef’s hat next to it on the menu! Served medium, it’s super moist inside & is a highly forkable piece of fish. It practically melts in your mouth.

Miso Glazed Norwegian Trout

Sliced cherry tomatoes & asparagus drizzled with garlic yuzu oil keep this dish light & fresh. The zucchini noodles underneath are tossed with a creamy pesto mayo that compliments the natural flavour of the trout. I do wish there were more zoodles to match the proportion of fish, as they were quite addictive.

If you’re all about the nibbly life, Rookery has a Tapas menu (available after 3PM) you can choose from. I can’t say much about the Har Cheong Gai Wings ($16++) as I don’t eat chicken wings, even more so when they are fried… But damn this smelled hella good.

Fragrant Har Cheong Gai Wings

The other tapas we had:
Wagyu Beef ($25++)
Meatballs ($17++) – these are made of beef, btw
Iberico Pork Ribs ($18++)
Sakura Ebi Capellini ($14++)
Crispy Pork Belly ($17++)

As a seafood lover, the Scallops ($22++) is totally my kind of tapas. Nicely seared Hokkaido scallops that are plump & juicy, served in a pool seaweed & miso butter. As I chomped down on my first scallop, I liked how firm its texture was without being rubbery. I dipped the crispy thin toast into the butter & was impressed. It’s pretty good; I had to go for seconds.

Scallops Tapas

You might think the Vongole Alla Blanc ($16++) is served with the same sauce as the Scallops, but they tasted different to me. The Korean clams are swimming in a broth made from garlic, white wine & chilli flakes for a nice kick. I preferred to dip my toast into this one!

Le Coq’s Meaty Skewers, Delectable Appetizers, Fun Pastas & Tasty Drinks

An impressively extensive menu at Le Coq – from appetizers to yakitori skewers, main courses (1-for-1 with Burpple Beyond) & pastas, & a rockin’ happy hour too. Brace yourself for a lengthy review…!

Hard to believe that their Fresh Oysters are only $2.50++ a pop. These New Zealand babies are creamy & decadent. Have them your way – with a squeeze of lemon or a dash of tabasco sauce. Or without anything at all; yes, they are that fresh. & at $16++ for a half dozen, $30++ for a dozen, that’s pretty dang affordable for the good stuff.

Fresh Oysters

Uni on Toast ($15++ for 3) got me all hot & bothered. Firstly, look at the size of that hunky sea urchin. Secondly, that bread is actually a bed I want to sleep on. Pillowy soft, yet slightly crispy on the outside so it doesn’t get soggy. Loved the textures & flavours of this one. I was left dreaming about this for days.

Uni (Sea Urchin) on Toast

Folks who want to take the heat up a notch will enjoy the Mala Chicken ($10++). It isn’t too wild, but it certainly has the numbness & spiciness that one seeks in Mala. I’m not a Mala expert, nor do I eat spicy food regularly. But I found myself picking slices from this silky smooth appetizer to pop into my mouth for that shiok feeling.

Mala Chicken Appetizer

The California Maki Dip with Crisps ($12++) was surprisingly popular; I attribute that to how refreshing & clean it is. It’s essentially a deconstructed California maki roll. Sounds simple, tastes great. The crabmeat used is fresh & flavourful, tossed together with avocado, mayonnaise & crunchy fish roe. IMHO, though, what makes this super addictive is the thin rice paper crisps on the side. Use them to scoop up the dip & comfortably crunch away. That’s pretty dang unique to me.

California Maki Dip with Crisps

Le Coq is a Burpple Beyond partner – so you can get 1-for-1 lunch or dinner mains here. However, they also have a fairly large menu that you can order from. Perfect for the office crowd, their drinks menu includes beer, wine, hard liquor & house cocktails. Swipe to see some of their cocktail concoctions that we sipped on through the night!

Their Happy Hour runs daily from 5 – 9PM, giving you a single glass of Grant’s Triple Wood Blended Scotch Whiskey or Hendrick’s Gin for $X at X PM, where X = 5, 6 or 7. At 8pm, it’s $10 a glass which is still okay, but the earlier the better fo’ sho. Also, Ladies Night is every Wednesday. #justsayin

Hello, G&T

& what better way to pair your evening drink with some skewers to munch on. Good variety of options here, with the Wagyu Beef ($6.80++) is my favourite. Soft & tender, you can taste the natural juices & flavours of the beef. The fattiness absolutely melts in your mouth… Very shiok.

Wagyu Beef Skewers

The Cartilage ($2.80++) was interesting – nice & crunchy, a texture that I was intrigued by & appreciated. Something I haven’t had before, actually. But it was unfortunately too heavily salted with the combination & heavy-handedness of both sea salt & togarashi. Gave feedback about this & they took it into account. I would hope they’ve fixed this since then. It’s always nice to speak to chefs/owners/staff that are open to feedback.

Cartilage Skewers

If the price of the Wagyu Beef is too premium for you, consider ordering the Chicken Thigh ($2.80++) or Sweetpork ($2.80++); they too are hella juicy 😍 My preference of the two is the sweetpork as it has a sauce of Thai spices & honey, & is a pleasantly tender sweet one to indulge in.

Chicken Thigh & Sweetpork Skewers

The pastas here look simple, but are good. Both are very different, so take your pick based on your taste/preference/mood.

The Cold Truffle Somen with Hotate & Caviar ($16++) was such a delight to slurp at the end of our meal… Not just because it’s cold & smooth. The light truffle flavour proved to be sooo refreshing on the palate. Very welcomed after an evening of varied specialty cocktails, taste explosion appetizers & crazy flavourful skewers.

The cold slices of scallop were of a nice thickness to lovingly sandwich between your tongue & the roof of your mouth… Before comfortably sinking your teeth into them, thereafter letting out a breathy “ahhh.” 😂

Cold Truffle Somen with Hotate & Caviar

The Mushroom Aglio Olio ($14++), on the other hand, is strikingly different as it is a warm capellini dish. A good vegetarian-friendly option, I wasn’t too bothered that this dish doesn’t have meat or seafood in it.

Most importantly, dang that flavour. It punches you right in the face! Chilli padi BAM. Finely chopped garlic BOOM. Earthy mushrooms YAS.
